Shea Perfection – Moisturising with Shea Body Butter

There’s nothing in this world quite so luxurious as massaging body butter into your skin after a long soak in a warm bubble bath. One of the reoccurring ingredients in many body butters (and ours!) is Shea Butter, an off-white colored fat extract which is well known throughout science and in passed-down tradition to have a beneficial nourishing and a softening effect on skin.

Generally, they are moisturizing creams with a very thick and buttery consistency. They can be massaged into the skin of the legs, arms, hands and torso and typically leave the skin oily and greasy so are used at night before bedtime for noticeable results in the morning when you wake up. Naturally Shea Butter doesn’t smell a lot like anything but you can find products of every flavor and variety from small-scale sellers to large stores such as The Body Shop. Popular varieties include honey, mango and coconut. Popular flavors in other products such as strawberry are avoided in favor of other ingredients more beneficial to the skin.

Although most commonly used as body moisturizers, they can also be used to remove eye make-up, as after shave, lip balm and more recently using body butter as a hair styling product. Typically the sale of body butters peaks around the winter time when skin tends to be driest. It is also a popular gift item, especially in gift sets.

Shea Butter is like food for the skin containing Vitamins A, E and F.  Vitamins A and E help the skin keep healthy.  These vitamins are especially important when it comes to helping sun damaged skin heal.  Vitamins A, E and F assist in staving off premature wrinkles and facial lines.  Vitamin F serves to protect the skin as well as help it heal. Shea Butter is also an anti-inflammatory so could be used as a natural replacement to ibuprofen and other painkillers.
