PHAs (Poly-hydroxy acids)
Here’s another one to add to the list: AHA, BHA… and now PHA’s – soon you’re going to need a PHD to understand and remember all these acids used in cosmetics!
PHA is the new kid on the block, and if you’ve experienced sensitivity or irritation in the past using an AHA or BHA then this could be a game changer for you.
PHA’s are a gentle chemical exfoliant. Because it has a bigger molecule size than AHA’s, it doesn’t penetrate the skin as deeply making it less irritating for those who are suffering with sensitive skin.
There is many different PHA’s but currently the most common are gluconolactone and lactobionic acid;
Gluconolactone
The most popular of the PHAs, gluconolactone not only works to exfoliate your skin, it also hydrates and may offer some antioxidant benefits.
Lactobionic acid
An oxidized form of milk, this acid works as both an exfoliator and a humectant, meaning it helps your skin retain moisture.
