What do the terms private label cosmetics, white label cosmetics or own label cosmetics actually mean? They are all terms for the same service where a company has a standard range of cosmetics that can be branded with the name and contact details for you or your organisation.
What are the advantages of private label? The main two advantages are speed and cost – you can have your own product range available in weeks, rather than months or years, and you avoid all the costs associated with developing, testing and registering cosmetics. This means you can quickly change products and packaging to reflect current trends and fashions, something the big global manufacturers can’t do.
And the disadvantages? You are very much in the hands of supplier – if their products and service are bad, or worse dangerous or illegal, you are technically liable for the consequences. And unless you want to work with multiple suppliers you will be limited to the products they can supply.
How do I get the best products for my own range and minimise the risks? Avoid suppliers that are not actually manufacturers themselves, some companies simply buy in low cost cosmetics which they then rebrand. Ask to visit their factory and check them out. Do they operate a Good Manufacturing Procedure (GMP) system? Can they provide all the necessary legal and regulatory documentation?
